Week 12 Discussion
Language in the World
Let’s start with the quiz!
Get out your device, use the access code on the board, and complete the quiz!
Quick Review
First, remember about language acquisition:
We
acquire
speech/sign
We must
learn
writing
So, what about CMC/emoji?
Characteristics?
Writing is learned, but modern texting appears to be acquired
CMC is often very different from traditional modes of writing
Texting seems to be about efficiency and meaning-making
Examples?
Emojis
Probably kind of pictograms/ideogram
BUT they do seem to provide a bit of extralinguistic information, like emotion, sarcasm, other message modulations
Not a separate language
Not ruining language
Same for other parts of CMC
These forms of communication differ stylistically from each other AND from traditional modes of communication!
Quick Review
Computational linguistics
is the area of linguistics that applies the methods of computer science to the analysis of language and speech
Speech synthesis and speech recognition = not easy problems!!
Speech recognition = speech-to-text (accuracy and speed)
Speech synthesis = text-to-speech (human-like voices)
Why does it matter?
Activity time!
So, since we’ve said that a lot of CMC is about
meaning-making
, we want to know how you interpret various emojis!
For each emoji (next slide), you need to do the following:
Answer this question: By itself, what does it mean?
If you have differences in meaning between platforms (e.g., text vs. Snapchat), explain those.
Write out a text message you might send with this emoji.
Explain how the addition of this emoji adds meaning beyond the text that is there. Provide context, as needed.
Did we miss your fave? Tell us about it in the same way!
